Stephen Sheller: Ross Memorial Lecture at Temple U. Law, March 2011

Attorney Stephen Sheller presented the Edward J. Ross Memorial Lecture March 17, 2011 in the Duane Morris LLP Moot Court Room at Temple University Beasley School of Law. In the lecture, "Saints and Evil-Doers" Attorney Sheller related his experience as a lawyer representing individuals against some of the largest multi-national corporations in the world. He was and continues to be lauded for his representation of whistleblowers and pursuit of public and governmental justice, bringing pharmaceutical and other corporate wrongdoing to the Department of Justice recently garnering over $4.2 billion in recovery for the U.S. Government and taxpayers. Sheller also shared with the audience his legal efforts in the public interest, including Bush v. Gore during the 2000 U.S. Presidential election. Other career events included representing the Black Panthers during a contentious and racially charged era. Sheller charged law students with the responsibility to achieving justice while advancing their skills in and dedication to the law.

$1.8 Million Levaquin Bellwether Verdict, McCormick on Trial Team

Attorney Brian J. McCormick, Jr. was on the trial team in Minnesota for the first test case of injuries from the drug Levaquin, garnering $700,000 in compensatory damages and $1.15 in punitive damages. The jury verdict for plaintiff John Schedin is the bellwether case in what could result in nearly 3,000 additional lawsuits. In addition to the national reach of Levaquin litigation, McCormick is on the plaintiffs liaison committee in the New Jersey lawsuits.

Class Action Certified in Tobacco Fraud Case, 2010

Attorneys Stephen Sheller and Martha Wivell of the Philadelphia law firm Sheller, P.C. represent plaintiffs in a lawsuit given a green light Tuesday, December 28, 2010 by the Minnesota Court of Appeals. The suit claims that Philip Morris misled smokers by marketing low-tar or "light" cigarettes as a healthier form of tobacco to persuade smokers not to quit. The three-judge panel of the appeals court also authorized the suit to proceed as a class action on behalf of people who purchased Marlboro Lights in Minnesota for personal consumption from 1972 to 2004.

$2.3 Billion Settlement in Sheller, P.C. Whistleblower Case, 2009

Pfizer Inc. ignored a 2005 FDA warning letter to stop promoting its antibiotic Zyvox@ as clinically superior to the significantly less expensive, generic vancomycin when its own FDA-approved label indicated otherwise. The drug giant also defrauded federal and state taxpayers by marketing Zyvox@ off-label, according to a qui tam whistleblower complaint filed by Sheller, P.C. attorneys and other documents unsealed with the September 1, 2009 $2.3 billion Pflzer settlement.

$10.1 Billion Tobacco Verdict Paves the Way for Sheller, P.C., 2003

An Illinois judge ordered Philip Morris USA to pay $10.1 billion in the first 'lite' cigarette consumer fraud class action lawsuit to come to trial. The action alleged the tobacco company committed consumer fraud in its advertising of 'lite' cigarettes. The verdict paved the way for Sheller, P.C. in similar lawsuits across the country.

On April 16, 2006, Ringwood Mines/Landfill site became the first site to be added to the National Priorities List after being removed from the list. The decision to restore Ringwood's Superfund status came after an investigation that was initiated by Stephen Sheller of Sheller, P.C.

$29.6 Million settlement announced in Sheller, P.C. Pier 34 Case, 2004

A $29.4 million settlement in the Pier 34 collapse was announced on January 28, 2004. The pier owner, a nightclub operator, and other defendants agreed to the settlement to end all personal injury claims related to the May 18,2000 tragedy in which three women were killed and 40 people were injured. Jamie Sheller of Sheller, P.C. represented one of the injured.
